Rethinking Ministry: The Call to Every Believer in the Marketplace

by Dave Miller

Do you see yourself—whether you’re an employee, a marketplace worker, or a business owner—as someone who can’t engage in ministry? Have you grown up thinking that your primary role is to support the pastor, the missionary, or the church staff? Maybe you’ve always understood your contribution as praying, giving, and occasionally going. But there’s so much more to the kingdom of God, and so much more that you have to offer. You should see yourself as a minister right where you are.

Business, employment, and work are where the majority of adults spend their lives. We work to meet our needs, but that doesn’t mean that work is separate from the kingdom. In fact, our workplaces are the training grounds where God shapes us, proving our faithfulness and preparing us for greater responsibilities.

Think about the parable of the talents. Jesus praised the servants who took what they were given and multiplied it. The one who hid his talent was rebuked. The lesson is clear: we are expected to use what we’ve been given, and that includes our time, skills, and opportunities in the workplace.

Too often, we’ve been led to believe that only professional Christians are called to ministry. But the priesthood of all believers means that every single believer has a role to play. If you are in Christ, you are an ambassador of the kingdom. Wherever you go, the kingdom goes with you, along with all its responsibilities and privileges.

If the culture around you hasn’t shown you that this is not only acceptable but expected, then let this be an encouragement to step out. Scripture is clear that every believer is called to be a disciple-maker, not just those in professional ministry roles.

So what’s stopping you? What barriers do you see? I’d love to hear your thoughts and encourage you to see your workplace as a vital part of God’s mission.
