In the spring of 2005, I sat in Systematic Theology I with Dr. Russell Moore. We started our three-hour class on a Monday evening with the usual circle drawn in the center of the white board and a question, “What is the central motif of scripture?” In what seemed like 30 minutes, three hours had escaped my notice. The white board was filled with lines, arrows, bible verses, chicken scratch and utter chaos, but the clear center circle was Jesus and the grand story of scripture from Genesis to Revelation had come alive like never before. Another puzzle piece had locked in place and I realized the God of the Serengeti plains of Africa, the God of the small country church of 30 where I was raised, and the longing in my heart was the very Jesus I had trusted at six years old. But he was more than just a ticket to heaven. He was… everything!
The question, “What is the central motif of Scripture?” had been answered not just by Dr. Moore, but by all the scripture dots he connected and the burning passion ignited by the Holy Spirit in my heart, THE GLORY OF GOD IN JESUS CHRIST! I sat there jaw on the floor, experiencing a rush of joy, fighting off the utter inability to believe what I was seeing and Jesus calmly reminded me this is not a surprise, He is the point and there is a mission for His church.
